Rustic Handmade Bird House

Handmade Bird House:

Why Should You Have a Bird House in Your Garden?

It can take more than 100 years for a tree to form hollows suitable for our native birds to nest in, and trees of this age are rapidly disappearing from our suburbs. Placing a Bird House like this one in your garden, provides a viable habitat alternative to natural nesting hollows, and is a great way to protect native birds and attract them to your garden.

This Bird House has has been locally made south of Perth by creator and wildlife lover, Brendon, and features a sturdy design made from upcycled timber offcuts, with a gabled roof for added protection from wind and rain, and a perch at the front entrance for birds to keep watch from. The back plate has ample room for a bracket to be fitted to install in your site of choice. Due to the upcycled nature of the materials, every Bird House is unique but is designed to blend into natural surroundings.

What Type of Birds Can You Expect to Attract?

Birds are often particular about the size and shape of their nesting sites. Bird Houses are ideal for several native bird species including Lorikeets, Tree Creepers and Pardalotes.

Where and When to Install Your Bird House:

  • Late Winter and early Spring are good times to install a bird house in your garden as birds are searching for nesting sites.
  • Provide as much protection as possible from wind, rain and direct sunlight.
  • Installing some nesting material such as decayed wood, shredded bark or untreated wood shavings can help attract birds to your bird house.
  • Place the bird house at least 1.5m above ground level and as far from the tree trunk as possible, to protect birds from predators.
  • Having a bird friendly garden that has native plants for food, and a bird bath will also help to encourage birds to your yard.
  • If you don't have a suitable tree in your yard, consider your verge tree or perhaps a tree at your local school or community garden!
