Avocado Propagation Vase

Avocado Propagation Vase:

A stylish and attractive way to display propagating avocado plants. While propagating avocadoes this way is unlikely to bear fruit, certainly not in the short term, it is an easy way to make attractive indoor plants for free. So instead of throwing your seed in the compost bin after your next brunch, grow a free plant instead!

The vase makes it easy to do, no more stabbing toothpicks into the seed to suspend over a jar - this vase is made for the task.

Avocado Propagation Guide:

  1. Start by cleaning your avocado seed. Take care to not cut into the brown seed cover on the seed. Sometimes soaking the pit in water before scrubbing will make it easier.
  2. Fill the vase with water to just below the top. The bottom half of the seed will need to be submerged for roots to develop.
  3. Place the seed with the pointy end facing upwards in the vase top.
  4. Place jar in bright spot, out of direct sunlight.
  5. In warm months, the seed should germinate within 6-8 weeks, it may take a little longer in the cooler months.
  6. Once a shoot has emerged from the top of the seed, let it keep growing until the stem is about 15cm long. Cut it back by just more than half to encourage new growth. Once it reaches 15cm high again, you can either remove the seed from water, and plant into a 25cm diameter pot filled with rich humus soil, leaving the top half of the seed exposed. Once potted, move your avocado plant into a sunny position indoors or outdoors.

For Best Results from your Avocado Vase:

  • Use rain water or filtered water as a first preference. If you use tap water, fill the vase the day before planting the seed to let the chlorine evaporate off. Don't use demineralised water, as plants need minerals.
  • Position your Avocado Vase where it will receive bright , indirect sunlight, so photosynthesis can occur.
  • Be patient. Some plants are quick to grow roots in water, while others are slow.
  • Change the water regularly, about once a week, to prevent mould, bacteria and fungus growth, which can doom your little avocado sprout.
  • Top up your vase regularly to ensure the seed remains half submerged in water.
